The A. Le Coq 61st Moonsund Regatta celebrated its winners | 15 Jul 18, piret.salmistu

Today (July 14h) was the last day of the A. Le Coq 61st Moonsund Regatta, dedicated to our centenary Estonia 100, Kalev Yacht Club’s 70th birthday, and Estonian Yachting Union’s 90th anniversary. The biggest and the most celebrated regatta in Estonia sailed through five harbours, from Kalev Yacht Club in Tallinn to Pärnu. The winners of the regatta in 2018 are: Sugar 2 (Pärnu Yacht Club), Adele (Yacht Club Baltsail), Bailarina (RSSC, Latvia), Katarina Jee (Saaremaa Maritime Sports Society), Tessa (Kalev Yacht Club), Mercurius (Saaremaa Maritime Sports Society) and Linda (Kalev Yacht Club).

Saturday morning was windless and after a couple of hours of waiting the last scheduled races were cancelled. This means the results are based on six races instead of seven. Despite the last cancelled races, the regatta in general was blessed with good sailing weather. One might even say it was a gentlemen’s regatta as most time could be sailed downwind, parading the spinnakers.

During the award ceremony three pedestal places in all seven groups were rewarded. All 21 winning teams received glass trophies by Agnes Torm and medals.

Andres Laul, helmsman of Sugar 2 (Pärnu Yacht Club), the winning team in ORC I, said they poured a lot of sweat and tears into this regatta: “We had a great start and the first four races determined our place. So much so that the windless conditions later did not affect us so much any more.”

Andrejs Buls, whose yacht Bailarina was victorious in ORC III, said they won thanks to their team spirit: “I hoped we had a chance to win this. What makes winning even sweeter is that no Latvian yacht has won the Moonsund Regatta before in ORC class.”

The winner in Folkboot and the new Estonian Champion Pertti Neero from Linda (Kalev Yacht Club) remarked: “It was not easy as we tied on points with the runner up. What saved us was that we had one more race win. We could not relax during the regatta, not for a moment. We wanted to win and we worked hard for it.”

Mart Tamm, captain of Katarina Jee (Saaremaa Maritime Sports Society), winner in ESTLYS I said: “The key to winning is tactics. We had a plan for each race – sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn’t – so we knew exactly what we were doing. And we were lucky too. You always need luck on the sea.”
